The Ugly Truth About Caring for a Special Needs Dog

Profound challenges come with this responsibility, and we won’t sugarcoat it. This is the reality without painting it in colors.

Caring for our special needs dog, Hershey, who cannot pee or poop independently, is a demanding task. She needs assistance to relieve herself every three hours, and the constant need for water intake and frequent bathroom breaks can feel overwhelming.

Our days revolve around ensuring Hershey stays hydrated and managing her bathroom needs. We must be vigilant to quickly notice when she needs to go, preventing any discomfort or mess. Our hands often feel tied, as her care requires our constant attention and presence.

Additionally, we dedicate time to exercises to maintain her muscle strength, hoping her condition might improve and she could regain mobility. Unfortunately, we’ve had to cancel many hiking trips, beach outings, and other weekend plans because we can't leave her alone for extended periods, and the trails or locations are not suitable for her wheelchair. Traveling also becomes nearly impossible due to the difficulty in finding professional care that can assist with her specific needs, like managing her bladder function.

But through these challenges, there are also profound rewards. Every small improvement, every smile, and every moment of comfort Hershey experiences brings immense joy and fulfillment. Caring for her has deepened our bond and taught us patience, resilience, and unconditional love. Hershey’s determination and spirit inspire us daily, making every effort worthwhile.

Sleeping next to Hershey is incredibly peaceful. She gives us rewarding feelings that are hard to describe. Despite the difficulties and sacrifices, she gives us so much in return, making every moment spent with her a cherished one.

For her, we’re willing to go the extra mile in creating and maintaining our brand, with Hershey as the face of it. Each product features her picture, and we strive to make both the brand and Hershey stand out among all others, testing our capacities and how much we can handle in the process.
